- Gibson Girl (1993 / 3702 / 074299037023) – Created by artist Charles Dana Gibson, the “Gibson Girl” was a popular American illustration subject that became a national icon for a new, modern ideal of womanhood featured in magazines and on commercial products, setting a standard for beauty and fashion emulated by women across various social classes from the mid-1890s to World War I. The “Gibson Girl” was depicted as tall and athletic, yet gracefully elegant, with an air of self-confidence and independence. This Barbie version of the “Gibson Girl” features a smiling brunette lady with a casual updo and side curls, wearing typical turn-of-the-century attire of a loose-fitting lace blouse gathered at the waist and tucked into a full skirt of faux silk moire material with matching capelet. Egyptian Queen Barbie represents that era with an elaborate bejeweled headdress sporting layered shaped pieces, a broad layered and beaded/jeweled “wesekh” or “usekh” collar typically depicted as being worn by both men and women, as well as deities. Gossamer blue material is gathered and draped strategically over her chest to coordinate with a blue and silver patterned skirt. French Lady Barbie wears a wedgewood blue velveteen gown with a long column skirt channeling the classic elegance of ancient Greek architecture. REDRESSED. Bob Mackie’s 1998 Holday Barbie with a grand big-curls updo is wearing fourth in the Barbie Classique series, “Midnight Gala,” consisting of the following:
- Gown – Strapless tulle-lined black velvet gown with gold glitter pattern and multi-color jewel adornment. Zips in back.
- Cape – Fully lined black velvet shawl-collar ball gown cape that slips on with elastic loops to secure to upper arms and hooks in front.
- Headband – Coordinating lined jeweled velvet headband that hooks in back.
- Shoes – The shoes included with this ensemble are hard plastic with shiny gold surface and sculpted toe-box jewels – these are not the original shoes that came with this outfit.
- Jewelry – Barbie is wearing her original 1998 holiday jewelry – faceted “diamond” stud earrings and ring – plus a gold/silver-tone hard plastic molded necklace from another doll ensemble. The earrings that came with the gown ensemble are not included.

However, the cape is velvet-lined and WILL stain, so as a precautionary measure, the doll included with this ensemble has had a coat of clear matte ModPodge applied to upper chest, arms, and neck to help prevent accidental contact staining. This coating is water soluble, will not harm the doll, and can be removed with a damp wash cloth. Alternatively, the cape and gown can be soaked in a vat of hot water with mild detergent (non-bleaching) to leach out excess dye. This is the standard method to colorfast a garment with staining/excess dye.

Her golden blond long hair with thin gold tinsel is in the original factory style, and her rooted lashes are in great shape. She’s been redressed in the Secret Spells jacket-dress over a shiny pink lamé bandeau swim top with silver braided center halter ties and yellow lamé swim bottoms with a gold waistband and sprinkles of gold glitter. Pink strappy sandals complete the look. As a final touch, she’s supporting a purple dragonfly on her hand – truly in touch with her natural side.
